My Comenius

I haven’t posted much about my actual assistantship and I thought it was about time to share more about my experience.

I work four days a week and Monday is my day off. I am in a scuola media (middle school) where the students are between the ages of 11 and 14. They go there for three years before going onto a high school of their choice. For example a classics school or a  technical school.  It is in high school where they specialise in the area they want to study further. Both scuola media and scuola superiore the students go to school Monday to Saturday from 8 am until 1pm. Its only the primary school that is Monday to Friday and they are there all day. If you want to find out more about the Italian school system look here.

I have two timetables. One I am in just English classes for the first and third week of the month. The second timetable is for the second and fourth week of the month where I am in music, technology and P.E except for the third year classes where I am always in English.

On the first and third week I work between 9am and 1pm with a free hour except on Wednesday where I work between 8am and 12pm. On the second and fourth week I work between 9am and 12pm. This means my afternoons are free 🙂

In the English classes I assist the teacher with the lesson. They have a course book that they follow and the majority of the lessons are based on it. I also help with their speaking based on the topic they are covering in the book. The teachers want me to help the students to speak more because it is the area in which they struggle. They will know the grammar but there is a lot of stuttering and stumbling when they speak. I sometimes prepare activities and this week I did a whole lesson for the third years on New York.

After the Christmas holidays I will be helping with KET exam classes (if you want to find out more have a look at the cambridge website). Its an optional class for the 3rd year students. I will also be doing an English class for teachers and parents after the holidays. Comenius is not just about gaining teaching experience or the school gaining a cultural and linguistic source but Comenius also allows the community to be involved. Thats why they want me to do this class because the community can gain something too.

So far this has been a rewarding experience and I would highly recommend Comenius. If you have any questions for me about my Comenius write a comment or email me at:

A presto! 🙂
