We all know the saying ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’, but in reality does anyone ever do it? We are all guilty of doing the complete opposite of what the locals do, whether its Rome, Paris or London. Lets face it tourists will be tourists.
When I went to Rome in January 2012 I did one of the most touristy things….
That’s right I threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain! However, I am cautious tourist and I try to avoid doing typical tourist things that can cause me to be ripped off. For example, I wouldn’t buy an ice cream at the Spanish Steps like these tourists did. €64 for ice cream :O Ridiculous! The story continues here. Maybe they should have followed the phrase.
I know this story is a few months old but there is a lesson to be learned from it. As a tourist take all the stupid typical photos you want, it doesn’t cost you a thing. However, when it comes to food and drink don’t go where the main tourist attractions are because you are bound to get ripped off! Also make sure you read the menu first to see what the prices are and if there are no prices then it probably means its expensive. Be a savvy tourist and always know what you are buying!
Remember ‘when in Rome…’ and hopefully you don’t get ripped off! Happy travels 🙂
